Yahoo!: Apple ships first of its new iMacs and has orders for 150,000 more.

In an article about plans for AT&T Wireless and Cingular Wireless to form a joint venture, I found this line: "AT&T Wireless has made the transition to GSM/GPRS service in more than 20 U.S. markets, and said it expects to complete its GSM/GPRS roll out by the end of 2002." Looks like the US mobile market may yet be assimilated to GSM. If this is the case, I can't wait until I can use a Handspring Treo with AT&T!

Also: last week's discovery (and possible future purchase if this product proves to have a better bang for the buck than the IBM Thinkpad X22), the new Toshiba Portégé 2000 ultralight notebook, scheduled to appear in February. At just 2.6 lbs and 0.73 inches deep, this is one sleek beauty.

The Seattle Business Journal this week (01/25/02) has an interesting article on the future of Amtrak service in the Pacific Northwest. I hope Cascades continues, grows and becomes an example for other regional rail services.

a plea for printer-friendly web pages

Major annoyance: when otherwise smart companies presumably spend a lot of resources developing corporate web sites and hire designers that neglect a very basic usability issue: people sometimes need to print web pages!

Hard coding pagewidths wider than A4/Letter paper and not providing a printable version of the information is very annoying because the last several words on every line get cut off when printed.

Today's offender: Cushman Wakefield.

Making things printer-friendly isn't that hard. Heck, even bryce.weblogs.com is printer-friendly with a link on the left nav.bar of every page.

Until TabletPCs take over the world, please support paper intelligently. That's all I ask.

i've been discovered by blogdex!

Maybe this really is an interconnected web, after all.

I look at the top referrers to this site every now and again and am always amazed just how many people out there are searching for places to stay in Italy. (My EuroTrip01 content has gotten a lot more mileage than I ever expected).

Anyway, I was quite surprised just now to see MIT's Blogdex show up just now as a referrer. It seems that I've been "discovered" at last. I have intentionally not submitted this site to BlogDex or DayPop, preferring to keep the site's profile relatively low.

But today I learn that my site is
number 611 on MIT's Blogdex. And that a guy named Alan J. Hawkins linked to my blog on MLK day. Was that a random visit or are you a regular reader, Alan?

estatic about discovering an excel keyboard shortcut

I just accidentally discovered an Excel keyboard shortcut that has eluded me for years: how to jump from tab to tab in a workbook without grabbing the mouse. Ctrl+PageUp and Ctrl+PageDown do the trick! Yay! This discovery will save me countless mouse-grabs at work.
