I had an incredibly nice day today. I really enjoyed doing lunch with Hannah and having a chance to reconnect and catch up. By design, I chose a low-key evening after what's been a tiring week. Cleaning out my inbox just now, I made some observations that could not have occured to me in real time:
Tue 10/09/01 8:51am. Josh wrote upon his return home from visiting me: "Yeah, that was a fun weekend. Thank YOU."
Tue 10/09/01 3:33pm. I wrote to Maria: "I am happy for you that it appears that the trip you have all looked forward to for so long is indeed soon going to be a reality. Enjoy yourself, the time off and the time with your family. I know it's going to be a really special trip."
In the same message, I wrote: "If there is one thing I've learned recently, it is that you can't plan too far in advance and higher priority events may suddenly arise (like Karen's birth preempting my moving plans last week)." A truer line could not have been penned.
Thu 10/11/01 3:30pm. I would receive a call that Dad had had a heart attack and was being rushed to the hospital. Minutes later, I would find out that Dad was gone.
10/14/01 1:01am. Pulling myself together for a few mintues, I began an email this way: "The past few days have been very trying and I wanted to share some unfortunate news with you...."
I would not touch technology again for a week.
