In a late night development that not even this morning's WSJ cover page could scoop, Cingular has announced it will acquire AT&T Wireless. The new combined company would have 46 million customers and one of the most advanced digital networks in the U.S., with spectrum in 49 states and coverage in 97 of the top 100 markets. The combined 2003 annual revenues of the two companies would have exceeded $32 billion.
My question is about branding. Will Cingular adopt the AT&T name or will they maintain both brands or phase out the venerable AT&T name and stay with Cingular? Anyone seen any news on this front?
Follow-up: This Q&A suggests the new combined company will adopt the Cingular name.
